“Is he ready?” This is a question I'm hearing frequently in the weeks before my son heads off to college.

We don't currently offer personalization on our Cuddlefish Towels, but that hasn't stopped some of our creative customers from finding ways to make their towels their own. Eileen P. from Virginia bought Cuddlefish Towels as Christmas gifts for her eight children. To help her keep track of whose towels were whose, she used her embroidery machine to personalize each towel. For her college-aged daughter she embroidered the greek symbols of her daughter's Delta Gamma sorority. Since DG’s symbol is an anchor and their colors are blue and pink, the below greeked-out anchor towel was a huge hit with her daughter. In fact, when she brought the towel back to campus all her sorority sisters wanted one of their own for Beach Week. Before heading to Myrtle Beach for a special girl's weekend with her best friends from college, Roberta was looking for a unique gift she could give her friends who were all turning 50. She wanted something fun and personal, so she decided to give each of her soon-to-be 50 year-old girlfriends a Cuddlefish Umbrella towel. As an added touch, she personalized each towel with her friend's names using a red fabric pen. Mary bought Cuddlefish Anchor towels for each of her three boys and in anticipation of fights over whose towel was whose, she put the boys' names on their towels using iron-on letters purchased from Michaels craft store. So far the names have stayed on (even after numerous washings and dryings) and the fights are off--at least those over using the wrong Cuddlefish towel. We would love to hear from other customers who have found new ways of personalized their Cuddlefish towels. Send your customized towel pictures to us via email mailto:[email protected] or post them to our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/cuddlefishtowelcompany. For those of you on the east coast, hang in there..the snow will definitely be gone by summer!
We are happy (and a bit jealous) to report that some of our friends have been escaping the cold, relentless New England winter by traveling to some wonderfully warm places. Even more exciting for us, they’ve let us know that they brought along their Cuddlefish towels. Karen C. shared this picture of her daughter Molly wrapped in a Cuddlefish towel during their winter getaway to Costa Rica. Her family went camping during their stay and let us know how happy they were to have packed their Cuddlefish towels. Turns out that Karen's trip was not the only trip our towels took to Costa Rica this winter--Pat M. sent us this photo of her Cuddlefish towels hang out at the beach waiting for the surf to come up. Even though we were a bit envious, we love hearing about all the places our towels have traveled, so friends and family please keep the photos coming. In the mean time, we at Cuddlefish Towel Company will continue to dream about summer.
We named our company after the Cuttlefish because we think they are amazing creatures, just like we think our towels are amazing towels. I learned about the awesomeness of the Cuttlefish while helping my son with his first grade science project. As part of the project, students had to research ten facts about a marine creature of their choosing. My son’s last fact was-- “The Cuttlefish is a great camouflager, but he is not cuddly.” So in honor of my son Chris, we decided to name our company the Cuddlefish Towel Company with two Ds instead of two Ts. Just how cool are cuttlefish? Check out these five interesting facts. 1. Cuttlefish can add a pair of eye spots to the back of their body, fooling predators into thinking they are being watched. 2. Cuttlefish have three separate hearts. One controls the pumping of the blood around the body, and the other two each serve a separate gill. 3. Amazingly, the cuttlefish can adopt male and female coloration on separate sides of its body. This allows one to trick a male and female pair who may be guarding eggs. 4. They can also spray ink to confuse predators and make their escape. The ink is ejected as a cloud, allowing the cuttlefish to get away. 5. If you thought these molluscs couldn’t get any more incredible, think again. Using their camouflage technique to alter the appearance of their body, they can stun their prey before striking. 2. Cuddlefish Towels are made of lightweight microfiber that makes them a breeze to carry, both over your shoulder or in a small drawstring back pack. 3. Cuddles our mascot is hidden in every one of our towel designs. 4. Our thin Cuddlefish towels save tons of space in your closet, beach bag or suitcase. Cuddlefish towels fold to the size of an ipad. 5. Cuddlefish towels are surprisingly absorbent. You have to try it to believe it, but our thin microfiber towels really do dry you off and quick.
www.cuddlefishtowelcompany.com. This past summer my daughter was lucky enough to spend six weeks in Italy on a study abroad program through her university. She lived with an Italian host in Verona and went to class for just three hours a day on Monday through Thursday. This cushy schedule left her with plenty of time to explore the city during the week and travel on the weekends, which is exactly what she did. While in Italy, she visited Rome, Venice, Naples, Capri and spent a weekend hiking the Dolomites. After listening to her rave about the food, wine and scenery, I realized I was jealous. Then in the fall when I started seeing on Facebook that my friends’ children were spending their junior year abroad in places like Copenhagen, London, Athens and Barcelona, those envious feelings returned. A little voice in my head was whining, “Hey, I want to go to those places too!” This got me pondering all the places I want to see before I die. Fortunately, Alaska and Ireland are two places on my travel bucket list that I have successfully crossed-off. Almost ten years ago I went on an Alaskan cruise with my mother and five sisters. During the trip we spent quality time on the boat laughing and reminiscing, as well as going on some fun excursions off the boat. We hiked across a glacier, took a helicopter ride over a spectacular mountain range and zipped around the rain forest in a flood plane, but the real gem of the trip was seeing Hubbard glacier up close. I cherish the hours we spent chatting and staring at that beautiful blue glacier. Now that my mother has passed away, I am grateful that we all took time out of our busy lives to take this memorable trip together. The summer after my daughter graduated from high school, my husband and I wanted to take the kids on a special family vacation. We were worried that it might be the last time all four kids would be willing and able to go on a long vacation with us. Since we both had grandparents who were born in Ireland and had grown up hearing stories about the place, we decided on Ireland for the big trip. We hired Paddy Wagon Tours to give us a private 9-day tour around the entire exterior of the island, which included stops in Dublin, Kinsale, Killarney, Galway, the Aran Islands, Donegal, Derry, and Belfast. No driving, no arguing, no stress. Definitely the way to go. While the kids complained a fair amount about the food and lack of wi-fi, we enjoyed the beautiful, varied landscapes and the friendly people, especially Joe our driver who kept us entertained with stories of Ireland’s colorful and often tragic past. Thinking about my past travels has eased some of my travel envy and has helped me figure out that a Mediterranean cruise to Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece is now on the top of my travel bucket list. What’s on your list?
The end of summer is always bittersweet for me. On the one hand, I am sad to bid farewell to our unscheduled days hanging at the pool, reading in the hammock, and eating late dinners on the deck. Another part of me is ready for the lazy days of summer to end and the busy school-year schedule to begin. But before I get too excited about carpooling and making lunches, I want to remember how much I enjoyed my summer. This summer was an especially fun one for us because it was filled with traveling. We started the summer off with an amazing trip to Maui in celebration of my father-in-law’s 80th and my husband’s 50th birthdays. Most of the vacation was spent beach hopping along the coast of South Maui, enjoying the clear warm water at Big Beach, Kamole III, Palauea, and Poolenalena beaches. The highlights from our Hawaii trip included multiple sea turtles sightings, delicious fish tacos, colorful rainbows, and stunning vistas on the Road to Hana. While in Hawaii I kept thinking how great our Cuddlefish Towels would be for island living because they’re small enough to keep in your bag so you’d always be ready to hit the beach. Plus the towels would dry almost instantly in Maui’s warm breeze. Later in the summer we squeezed in two more trips, one to New Hampshire and another to Lake Pend Oreille in Sandpoint, Idaho. Being originally from Montana, I love the mountains because they feel like home. Our mountain vacations were a bit more active than the beach bumming we did in Maui and involved tennis, volleyball, hiking, tubing, jet skiing, swimming, and even a few CrossFit WODs with sisters. But my favorite part of the lake vacation with my family is always the campfires--funny banter, s’mores, old music (The Night Chicago Died, Billy Don’t be A Hero), poem readings (Cremation of Sam McGee, Casey at the Bat), and star gazing. Doesn’t get much better than that! The last trip of the summer was a quick overnight trip to Richmond, VA to move my daughter back into the dorms for her sophomore year of college. What a difference a year makes--she was so excited to be back and knew exactly where she wanted everything to go in her room. The move in was a breeze (and much less emotional). Plus this year she brought a few Cuddlefish Towels with her so now she has more room for clothes in her closet!
The women behind the thin towels...
Mary – the most enthusiastic Cuddlefish Co. member, she dreams of linen closets made spacious with neat stacks of microfiber towels. Caroline – the Italian connection, introducer of the microfiber beach towel to the mamme americane. Roberta – expert business lady, she never says no to a challenge. Georgia – artist, designer and strong believer in the loop for hanging up towels. So why would anyone want a really thin towel?” We do! We are four moms who want really thin, lightweight towels to carry around for our broods. And the teenagers in our broods want a packable towel to carry around in their drawstring backpacks. They work just like regular terry cloth towels. They get you dry…they’re just really thin! from Napoli to Cumberland Caroline lives in Naples, Italy, with her three young girls where microfiber towels are all the rage. Everyone has them and uses them for the pool, beach, and gym. Microfiber towels are light and absorbent and easy to pack. Living in the city means walking and taking a funicular to the port to take a ferry over to the Amalfi coast or Capri. You really want the lightest bag possible. Every summer Caroline visits her sisters, Roberta and Georgia, in Cumberland, RI, and she always tries to bring things that you can’t find in the USA. So two summers ago she came with a bunch of microfiber towels for the cousins. The boys were confused at first…were these things blankets or towels? But they were so light they insisted on carrying their own towels to the beach…and back. Georgia’s next-door neighbor, Mary, mother of four, witnessed the towels in action one weekend on Cape Cod. “I love these thin towels!” she said. “Imagine your linen closet with these big towels folded up so small and stacked neatly inside!” Mary was very enthusiastic about the thin towels. So after much brainstorming and designing…The Cuddlefish Towel Company was born! |
